My talks

audience

Growing up as an introvert, I never imagined that I would ever be able to speak in front of a group.  But apparently, when I am passionate about a topic, nothing can stop me from telling others what I know.  Narratives have also interested me throughout my life and using a small story or anecdote to illustrate a point is the best way to communicate ideas.  I also find that I am uncomfortable until my audience chuckles or laughs at something humorous, so adding levity is always part of my strategy (and scientists now tell us that this helps us recall what we’ve learned!).

My artistic/design background certainly helps create interesting ‘slides’, and I have learned a lot about how to convey a concept through trial and error.  After more than 20 years of giving presentation of various kinds, I am more or less comfortable with the process.  People always say I look very natural on stage, even though I still find it a bit scary.  But it is in pushing past what we think are our limits that we find the greatest rewards.

Most recent talks I’ve given:

The mediterranean climate – understanding, accepting, embracing

Le Jardin des Plantes du Montpellier – France’s oldest botanical garden
